Deeply influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright, Richard Neutra and Japanese design, Ron Thom was one of the most significant talents to emerge from the postwar Vancouver architecture scene. Co-designed with associate Paul Merrick, Thom’s Fraser residence, completed in 1968 at 4 Old George Place, Rosedale, exemplifies his fusion of West Coast sensibilities with the Ontario landscape and building traditions.

Saul Steinberg’s New Yorker map of the world, New Yorker cover, March 29, 1976 (via)

My friend @jndevereux, who now lives in Austin but lived in New York for over ten years, had an excellent rant about “smug provincialism” after @kbandersen tweeted the John Updike quote, “The true New Yorker secretly believes that people living anywhere else have to be, in some sense, kidding.”

New Yorkers who celebrate smug incuriosity…I love New York, lived there nearly ten years (through 9/11), etc., but smug provincialism is the most tedious thing about NYC’s culture. New Yorkers are never more like the hicks they disdain than when bragging about how they have no interest in other places. And I’ve lived for years in New York and among hicks, so I know what I’m talking about. It’s like the famous Steinberg poster, which I read as slightly barbed satire, but some people seem to think is a guide to right thinking. I got angry when people in NYC would tell me “only tourists look up at the buildings.” ONLY A BUFFOON IGNORES THE BUILDINGS! LOOK UP! It always bugged me: you live in a fantastic city, but you’re supposed to act bored about it and the world? F that! In short, celebrate curiosity and cosmopolitanism, not narrowness. I love you, NYC.

August 26th is Women’s Equality Day.

Women’s Equality Day was established in 1971 to commemorate the passage of the 19th Amendment, which affirmed the women’s right to vote. The 19th Amendment was incorporated into the Constitution on August 26, 1920.

Above is a photo of Betty Friedan, a leading feminist and activist. Frieden advocated for the Equal Rights Amendment and is famously known for organizing the Women’s Strike for Equality.

The ERA was first introduced in 1923 and has been reintroduced at every Congress since then. The amendment was very close to ratification several decades ago, but fell three states short of the 38 states needed to include the ERA in the U.S. Constitution.

The text:

Section 1: Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.

Section 2: The Congress shall have the power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.

Section 3: This amendment shall take effect two years after the date of ratification.

On Women’s Equality Day, if I can share just one of my favorite speeches on equality with you, it’d be this speech from Shirley Chisholm. Chisholm was the first black Congresswoman in the U.S., the first black candidate on a major party ticket, the first woman on the Democratic party ticket for a presidential nomination and one of the founding members of the Congressional Black Caucus. In 1969, while she was a Congresswoman representing NY’s 12th, she spoke before the House on racial and gender oppression as she reintroduced the ERA:

As a black person, I am no stranger to race prejudice. But the truth is that in the political world I have been far oftener discriminated against because I am a woman than because I am black.

Prejudice against blacks is becoming unacceptable although it will take years to eliminate it. But it is doomed because, slowly, white America is beginning to admit that it exists. Prejudice against women is still acceptable. There is very little understanding yet of the immorality involved in double pay scales and the classification of most of the better jobs as “for men only.”

More than half of the population of the United States is female. But women occupy only 2 percent of the managerial positions. They have not even reached the level of tokenism yet. No women sit on the AFL-CIO council or Supreme Court. There have been only two women who have held Cabinet rank, and at present there are none. Only two women now hold ambassadorial rank in the diplomatic corps. In Congress, we are down to one Senator and 10 Representatives.

Considering that there are about 3 1/2 million more women in the United States than men, this situation is outrageous.

It is true that part of the problem has been that women have not been aggressive in demanding their rights. This was also true of the black population for many years. They submitted to oppression and even cooperated with it. Women have done the same thing. But now there is an awareness of this situation particularly among the younger segment of the population.

As in the field of equal rights for blacks, Spanish-Americans, the Indians, and other groups, laws will not change such deep-seated problems overnight. But they can be used to provide protection for those who are most abused, and to begin the process of evolutionary change by compelling the insensitive majority to reexamine it’s unconscious attitudes.

It is for this reason that I wish to introduce today a proposal that has been before every Congress for the last 40 years and that sooner or later must become part of the basic law of the land — the equal rights amendment.
